Vista Codec Package
Vista Codec Package is an audio & video codec package installation for Win Vista and XP, made by Shark007. It enables Windows Media Player to play over 15 different audio and video formats.
The utility includes many video codecs from H264 to DivX, and several audio codecs like Flac and Ogg; which normally aren't recognized by the player.
Although this package was designed for Win Vista, it works just as well with Win XP, and there is also a separate package for Win 7. After installation Windows Media Player and Vista Media Center will instantly recognize all supported files as playable.
The package contains a Settings window that will enable users to choose different splitters and decoders for specific filetypes. The utility also allows to choose different speaker configurations for an 'input' and up to 7.1 channel in 'output'.
One of the new features (which is excellent) is contained in the installer, as it removes other popular codec releases present on the computer before installing. There is no need to make any adjustments to play media contents immediately.
Other new additions are concerned at the functional level, meaning, updates to the codecs and video and audio filters were done.
It must be said it's one of the best codec packages to compliment Windows since it includes both audio and vide, and is free.

XviD
Xvid is a program to compress/decompress MPEG-4 video based in blocks.
Using advanced algorithms, it can provide excellent picture quality even at high compression ratios.
The reason to compress videos is simple: to reduce bandwith usage when you download or upload your video files through the Internet.
The application produces smaller files, so you can put more contents on your hard disk or CD-ROM without quality loss.
The program´s similar to DivX, since Xvid is an open source project distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). That means that it´s free to use, and everyone can contribute to its development.
A simple installation will allow all your media software to play Xvid-compressed video, using Xvid directly, with no participation from you. You will be able to play every DivX-compressed video, too.
Normally, you will not need to adjust any settings, but you can configure both the encoder and the decoder through the provided applications.
